Marianapolis Prep celebrated its 85th commencement on June 3 by graduating 85 students.
The Class of 2012 was represented by students from across the northeast, Puerto Rico, and the countries of Taiwan, China, Korea, Mexico and Japan.
Salutatorian Yilin “Bill” Wei, of Shaghai, China, spoke to his classmates about the importance of not giving up, comparing life to tennis, because “nothing is really over until the moment you stop trying.”
“Three years ago, I could not even hit a tennis ball over the net into play. My friends even said that tennis was probably not my strength. Apparently I did not believe them,” Wei said.
Wei, who was the co-captain of the varsity tennis team this year, ended his tennis career at Marianapolis with 28 wins and 6 losses. Wei plans to attend UC Berkeley to study mathematics in the fall.
Delivering the commencement address was retiring chairman of the Trinity Foundation, Kenneth Ebbitt ’60. The Trinity Foundation was formed in 2001 and took over financial responsibility of the school from the Marians of the Immaculate Conception. In February of 2010, the Trinity Foundation officially purchased the school.
Ebbitt encouraged the graduates to take advantage of the “unprecedented opportunity for change” that college brings.
“College gives you the chance to hit the reset button,” Ebbitt said. “In three months you will be entering an exciting new world where nobody knows you. No one knows the limitations you think you have. To everyone who meets you, you are a blank slate.”
Valedictorian Taylor Downs, of Brooklyn, Conn. thanked her peers for their continued support of her and for each other, saying, “We may come from all over the world, from all walks of life, but we all care about our classmates.”
Downs plans to attend Georgetown University to study sociology.
Head of School Joseph Hanrahan, who just completed his first year in the position, told the graduates to take what they have learned at Marianapolis and help “to make the world a better place to live.”
