Marianapolis varsity wrestling wrestled to a sixth place finish at the Eastern Independent League Invitational on Wednesday, hosted by Portsmouth Abbey. Sophomore Spencer Courville, junior captain Andre Looney and senior captain Alex Stawiecki all took top honors for the Golden Knights in third place.

Freshman Lucas Rhodes had an amazing tournament going 2-2 and turning the number one seed at 113 on his back multiple times in a hotly contested loss. Sophomores Zach King (2-2) and Alex Spetseris (1-2) both wrestled hard at 120, King coming out on top when they faced each other in the consolation bracket. Rhodes and King both finished fourth in their weight class.

Courville went 2-1 for the day to take third at 132. Junior Evan Lundt went 1-2 at 138 and sophomore Johnna Romanek got a win in the girls’ tournament to also record a 1-2 record. Sophomores Szymon Mamro and Danny Ducharme both went 0-2 against tough competition.

Looney suffered an early setback at 126 in the semifinals before recovering for a 2-1 day and a third-place finish. Stawiecki also lost in the semifinals, but went 3-1 for his third-place finish. Both will wrestle next weekend at New Englands in Hartford, as they prequalified by winning more than 2/3 of their matches this season.

The Knights look forward to hosting their only home meet next Wednesday, a tri-meet with Eagle Hill and Worcester Academy.
