Win 54-35

Lucas Yash '20 scored a career-high 22 points and Danny Moors '20 added 16 as Marianapolis opened its 2019-2020 basketball season with a convincing 54-35 victory over Cushing Academy in Thompson, CT.

Yash, one of three senior co-captains, got the Golden Knights off to a super start, scoring 10 points in the first three minutes to push the home team to a quick 12-4 advantage.  But the Cushing Academy Penguins gamely rallied midway through the first half, using a 15-3 spurt to claim a 19-15 lead.  The Golden Knights, helped by a three-pointer from Emil Johnson '23 (his first points at Marianapolis), ended their offensive drought and nosed ahead 22-20 at the half.

Moors, Yash, Ryan Martin '20, and Connor Murray '20 turned up their defensive intensity significantly to start the second half, and it paid off with a number of transition baskets.  A key bucket in the lane by Paul Davey '20 finally pushed the lead to 10 with about 10 minutes remaining.

From there, the Golden Knights locked it down on the defensive end, holding Cushing to a total of 15 second-half points.  Aidan Cook's long three-pointer from the left wing provided the final margin and sent the raucous fans home happy.

The Golden Knights (1-0) travel to MacDuffie School on Saturday afternoon for a stern road test.
