Loss 10-9

Varsity ultimate fell 10-9 on double universe point in their opening game of the 2019 campaign to a balanced Beaver Country Day School team.

Despite the loss, the Knights gave themselves a chance to win in the second half, scoring on three consecutive possessions to tie the game with just 15 seconds remaining. After a long point, Beaver was able to take the match with patient offense, a trait the Knights will do well to replicate in the coming months.

Senior Sam Roy took home man-of-the-match honors, leading the team with 3 goals and chipping in 2 assists. His defensive presence was exemplary, especially considering he hadn’t played a competitive contest since his sophomore year.

The other scorers were seniors Rafael Fauxbel (2), and Cole McGovern, juniors Nick Basley, Zachary Atwood and freshman Tim Hall, who each hauled in one apiece. McGovern and fellow senior Maxwell Hayes contributed 3 assists each, and senior Jacob Rice rounded out the helpers with one. McGovern and Fauxbel recorded 4 defensive blocks each to lead the Knights to 21 overall turnovers forced.

Blustery wind contributed to some of the Knights’ woes, helping them to 73 total turnovers, but they’ll have precious little time to improve as the team prepares to host Concord Academy on Friday.
