Ehmil Johnson '21 scored 15 points and Ryan Martin added 11 as Marianapolis avenged a tough loss earlier in the season by stifling Beaver Country Day School 51-30 in the final home game for the Golden Knights.
After struggling from the outside for a couple of games, Johnson found his three-point stroke early and often, burying four (4) to give Marianapolis the jumpstart it needed. Martin played an excellent all-around game, controlled but enthusiastic. His defensive intensity set the tone in the first few minutes as the Golden Knights jumped out to an early 12-3 lead.
Beaver Country Day had picked apart MPrep's zone defense in a 64-56 win over the Golden Knights on February 4th. A switch to a hybrid man-to-man did wonders as the home team reached the halftime break with a 27-14 advantage.
The coaching point at the break was to avoid the mental letdowns that had hurt Marianapolis in some previous contests. Led by Luke Lageman '19, Danny Moors '20, and Kualim Johnson '21, the squad came out with a vengeance in the second half and locked down on the defensive end. Lageman, celebrated beforehand on Senior Day, did his usual yeoman's work in the paint and on the glass. Moors embraced the challenge against a formidable and talented guard. Johnson played outstanding help defense throughout.
Lucas Yash (7 points) and Sean-Patrick Houssan (5 points) contributed with solid minutes off the bench for the Golden Knights (9-3 overall), who look forward to two key practices in preparation for Saturday's away clash against Pomfret School.
