Kualim Johnson '21 scored 14 points and Danny Moors '20 added 12 as Marianapolis defeated Pomfret School 53-36 in their home opener. Wearing the red jerseys for the first time this season, the Golden Knights (4-0) played outstanding defense to start the game and built up a 20-point lead with under two minutes remaining in the first half.
Ethan Bibeau '20 provided a much-needed spark off the bench with four points in the first half as Marianapolis coasted into the half with a 30-12 advantage.
Pomfret, to its credit, came out with much more enthusiasm and vigor in the second half and used a brief three-point barrage to cut the lead down to 14 in the waning moments. But Moors, playing his best all-around game of the season, chipped in at big moments with three key lay-ups to stave off any serious Pomfret rally.
Lucas Yash '20, Ehmil Johnson '21, and Ryan Martin '20 combined for 19 points in secondary scoring roles to support Kualim Johnson and Moors. Senior co-captain Luke Lageman '19 delivered a strong defensive effort on the interior as the bulwark of an active zone defense.
Marianapolis has three practices to make the necessary offensive adjustments in advance of the next game, a tough home test against a talented team from MacDuffie School. That game will take place on Wednesday, January 16.
