Ehmil Johnson '21 and Kualim Johnson '21 scored 16 points each as Marianapolis kicked off its season with an impressive 58-27 road win over Cushing Academy. Ehmil Johnson helped the Golden Knights emerge from a slow shooting start by scoring the first 11 points for the squad. With Marianapolis leading 8-7 midway through the first half, the starters upped their defensive intensity dramatically en route to a punishing 23-3 run to end the half. The lead was 21 points at the break.
Kualim Johnson, who had been relatively quiet in the first half, exploded for 14 points within a four-minute span to open the second half as Marianapolis expanded the lead to 30.
Ryan Martin '20 chipped in with seven points and a handful of excellent defensive plays (including the first charge of the season), while Luke Lageman '19 added five points and a number of contested shots around the rim.
Sean-Patrick Houssan '21, Paul Davey '20, and Ethan Gosper '20 all scored buckets in the final minutes for Marianapolis (1-0), which goes on the longest road trip of the season, to Northfield Mount Hermon, on Saturday afternoon in hopes of a second consecutive victory.
