The Marianapolis Varsity Volleyball team dropped a 5-set nail-biter on the road at Cushing Academy. The dominant serving of the Golden Knights shone in the opening set. K. Heney '19 chalked up 5 early from behind the line, and senior captains L. Madden, ‘19 and M. Webber, ‘19 added another 5. Set one finished 25-19 for MPrep. Fortunes flipped for set two. Although the Knights saw excellent setting from junior Mary Wall, the pass reception on serve receive was flat-footed. Set two went to Cushing 17-25. Same score, different story in set three, as MPrep dropped a third to the scrappy Cushing offense. The Knights were a step late on hitting and tipping opportunities, and CA took advantage of free balls readily. Set four saw a loud Marianapolis comeback. Wall was tough behind the line, newcomer C. King '21 was exceptional at the net, and senior captain J. Madden was relentless from the back row, serving to a 25-20 victory. Although the Knights led 7-4 in the crucial fifth set, a tough serving run from Cushing's fourth server put MPrep on its heels. It was 7-8 at the midpoint switch, and the girls could not bounce back for a closing rally. Set five concluded 9-15. Marianapolis hosts Pomfret school for its home opener next Wednesday. Go Knights!
