Senior Eva Widmeyer, of Nova Scotia, Canada, signed her National Letter of Intent to play basketball for the University of Vermont on Friday, November 10.

Widmeyer has been playing basketball since the third grade “after my Grandfather persuaded us into giving it a try. My twin sister and I were horrible at first. We just ran around the court with high socks and two pony tails in our hair.” She plays either the 2 or 3, shooting guard or small forward. Last year, Widmeyer helped the team win the New England Class A Championship.

Widmeyer decided to sign with UVM because “It was everything I wanted and more in a university.” She continued, “The girls on the team were all best friends and so close, the campus was green and beautiful, and the coaches believed in me from the beginning. UVM was my first offer so I knew they believed in me first.”

She will be enrolled in the school of arts and sciences possibly with a pre-law major. She hopes to attend law school after UVM.

“When faced with adversity, Eva shines and I know she will continue to do that well into the future,” noted Marianapolis girls’ varsity basketball head coach Lauren Moore. “This season Eva will bring her athletic ability, defensive tenacity, and her ability to get to the rim to our team which will only prepare her for the road ahead in the America East. Eva has made a lasting impression on our program and I am proud of the player and person she has become.”

The University of Vermont is located in Burlington, Vermont. The women’s basketball team is Division I and competes in the America East Conference.
