Marianapolis, have you heard the news?! On October 13, 2016, the Marianapolis Athletic Department announced that it will be adding a swim team extracurricular option for the winter season.
The announcement came in the form of a video posted to Marianapolis social media accounts. The video featured Athletic Director, Ms. Lauren Moore, Head of School, Mr. Joe Hanrahan, Assistant Head of School, Mr. David DiCicco, and faculty members, Ms. Michelle Parker, Mr. Andrew Vitale, Mr. Joshua Roesler, and Mrs. Barbara Gaudion. The Marianapolis faculty dressed up in swim goggles, snorkels, and flippers to make the announcement, and Mr. DiCicco dove into the Hale YMCA Youth and Family Center swimming pool in his suit and tie to show his excitement for the new addition to the Marianapolis extracurricular program. The full video announcement can be found here.
The Athletic Department partnered with the newly opened Hale YMCA, located in Putnam, Conn., to kickstart the swim team, a program they had been looking to start for a while. The Athletic Department hopes to expand the program in the future, including accepting more members.
The co-ed swim team, made up of thirteen swimmers of varying levels, will practice five days a week at the Hale YMCA. The team’s head coach will be Mrs. Adrienne Fournier, and the assistant coach will be Mr. Roesler.
Throughout the winter season, the team will take part in multiple meets, competing in the New England Preparatory School Athletic Council (NEPSAC) league. The swim team will compete against other schools in the NEPSAC league, including Cheshire Academy, Moses Brown, Kingswood Oxford, Williams School, and Hamden Hall.
Ms. Moore and the Athletic Department are “super excited for the students pioneering the program,” and they hope that “the students enjoy their time in the pool, grow as swimmers and people, and work hard to represent our school.”
